Setec CCS1 to Tesla Adapter (North America) Review

Late in 2020 a company out of Hong Kong named Setec was advertising a new Tesla to CCS1 adapter for Tesla owners in North America (and Korea).

Firmware updates are available from this link:

I was one of the first people in Canada to receive this adapter and while testing it on multiple DC Fast chargers in BC, Canada I have had no success.

I have worked with Setec for the past few weeks trying updated firmware and even attaching my laptop to the adapter to gather diagnostics logs while charging at the Fast Charger, but thus far we have made no progress.

I made a little progress on January 8, 2021, where I could actually get somewhat consistent results and learned how to get the adapter working once it completely stops working:

  1. Turn on the Setec adapter by pressing the power on button (see the green LED turn on)
  2. Plug in the DC Fast charger CCS plug into the Setec adapter
  3. Open the charge port on the3 Tesla
  4. Firmly push the Setec adapter into the Tesla charge port (if done properly you should see the LED on the adapter blinking green)
  5. After vehicle communications exchange between the adapter and DC Fast charger, the BC Hydro station will ask you to authenticate, use your RFID card or BC Hydro app to start the session
  6. At this point, you will see some initiation steps as the charger and car talk, but eventually, you will get a communication error

I did notice after a while the adapter NO LONGER blinks green and you cannot get the vehicle to give info to the DC Fast charger. At this point do a Hard Reset on your Tesla (hold both buttons on the steering wheel while pushing the brake pedal until the screen goes black)

Capturing communications logs for Setec from a BC Hydro charger

At this point it seems that the following charger manufacturer types DO NOT work:

AddEnergie, Flo, BC Hydro, Petro Canada, BTC

Those types that do work:

Trillium, Tellus

*UPDATE as of January 28, 2021 using firmware v140 I am able to consistently charge on BC Hydro chargers:

Others across North America have had different levels of failure or success with the current state of this adapter, it seems to depend on the manufacturer type of the charger:

*UPDATE as of March 1, 2021 using firmware v145 I am able to consistently charge on Delta 25kw chargers meaning that all chargers in BC, Canada are working:
