EV Long Trip EV Range Testing

Mark pushes the limits of his 2020 Tesla Model 3 AWD – Alaska Highway

Prince George, BC to Dawson Creek, BC | 400 km in one charge | Summer time

My goal for this trip was an attempt to test the limits of my Tesla Model 3 with a real-world scenario driving through a weaving mountain pass. I had made part of this trip to the Caron Creek RV Site back (https://www.plugshare.com/location/159688) back in April when the weather was very snowy in Northern BC (South of Chetwynd, BC) see here: https://youtu.be/y6uSCCiBdCw .

For this summer trip, I drove 397 km from Prince George, BC to Dawson Creek, BC, then 401 km on the way back.

00:00 – Start
06:47 – The pre-trip plan using A better router Planner to set goals along the way
07:55 – Leaving Prince George with 100% charge
10:43 – Arrive in Dawson Creek with 12% charge
12:55 – Arrive back home to Prince George, BC with 4% charge
13:47 – Stats on TeslaFi for the trip from Prince George BC – Dawson Creek, BC (387 km, 152 Wh/km, 60.19 kWh used, avg speed 90 kph max speed 108 kph)
14:48 – Stats on TeslaFi for the trip from Dawson Creek, BC – Prince George BC (401 km, 159 Wh/km, 63.78 kWh used, avg speed 88 kph max speed 130 kph)
17:25 – Start of video clips made during the actual trip
24:29 – GoPro footage driving from Prince George to Chetwynd
43:20 – GoPro footage driving from Dawson Creek to Chetwynd

Based on my experience with this drive you should be able to drive the following routes if you stay within the speed limit and have a full charge (in the summer):

  • Prince George, BC – Smithers, BC – 382 km
  • Prince George, BC – Hudon Hope, BC – 358 km
  • Prince George, BC – Jasper, AB – 387 km
  • Prince George, BC – Clinton, BC – 410 km
