The following announcement was made this past week indicating that 55 new level 2 chargers will be installed around northern BC.

“Investment from the CleanBC Communities Fund and Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program will help build 55 Level 2 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations located in 25 communities across northern and central B.C.”

EV charging stations will be located in the following jurisdictions:

  • 100 Mile House (two stations)
  • Ashcroft (two stations)
  • Barriere (two stations)
  • Burns Lake (one station)
  • Granisle (one station)
  • Haida Gwaii – Masset (one station); Tow Hill (one station); Sandspit (one station); Queen Charlotte (one station)
  • Houston (one station)
  • Kitimat (two stations)
  • Logan Lake (two stations)
  • McBride (four stations)
  • Nisga’a Nation (five stations)
  • Prince George (12 stations)
  • Prince Rupert (two stations)
  • Quesnel (two stations)
  • Smithers (two stations)
  • Stellat’en First Nation (one station)
  • Stewart (one station)
  • Sun Peaks (two stations)
  • Terrace (two stations)
  • Valemount (two stations)
  • Vanderhoof (two stations)
  • Village of Hazelton (one station)

This is good news as this will make travel more accessible and local EV drivers will have more options for charging (especially useful for those who cannot charge at home).

Regarding level 3 chargers (and also what I call level 2.5 –> 25kw) there has been a lot of action by the Ministry of Transportation (Moti) and BC Hydro in the past 12 months. The following new DC Fast chargers were brought online recently:

There is some talk from the ministry of transportation regarding new 4 new chargers, 25 kW DCFCs. One in Ashcroft, BC, one in East Pine near Chetwynd, BC, one in the Cluculz Lake rest area near Vanderhoof, BC, and one in the Savory rest area near Endako, BC. The completion date is tentatively December 2020. None of this is confirmed, but we can be hopeful right?

We are in desperate need of DC Fast chargers to the West and to the North of Prince George, BC. Sadly we learned today (September 10, 2020) that the DC Fast charger scheduled to be completed this month in Houston, BC https://www.plugshare.com/location/249362 (and New Hazelton: https://www.plugshare.com/location/243564) will be delayed until 2021 due to some complications with the projects. On the positive side, we have learned that the Prince George, BC, DC Fast charger is still scheduled to complete in Sept/Oct 2020 (https://www.plugshare.com/location/223802)

The DC Fast charger planned for Fraser Lake BC is now scheduled to come online in October 2020! (https://www.plugshare.com/location/243560)

This is a critical charger as it now makes travel from Prince George to Prince Rupert a realistic endeavor since there is a 25kw charger near Terrace (Boulder Creek rest area) having the Fraser Lake charger closer the final gap!

*UPDATE: September 18, 2020, The Burns Lake Level 2 charger is now back online: https://www.plugshare.com/location/15565 but even more importantly the Burns Lake BC Hydro Level 3 charger will go online by end of October 2020: https://www.plugshare.com/location/243562
